You're the Boss

Well… not really. This bloke’s the boss! ->

Gary tends to keep a low profile. “The station doesn’t run itself” he says and he has thousands of four legged ‘guests’ to keep happy. You might spot him overhead as he musters the sheep and checks the station bores from his Cessna 172 – his “Toyota in the sky”, or come across him ‘out the back’ as you explore the station with your ‘mud map’.

Gary is happy to share his intimate knowledge of all things to do with life and the running of a large pastoral station…. if you can catch him!

But, as our welcome guest at Trilby Station you are a VIP, the next best thing to being The Boss! We want your visit here to be memorable and we take great pride in our accommodation and the quality service we provide for all our guests.

There’s lots to do for the energetic visitor, but you won’t be pushed and prodded…if you just want to put your feet up and relax with a good book and a drink – then just do it.

But if you fancy a spot of fishing or yabbying, or maybe to paddle a canoe – the majestic Darling River is there for you to enjoy. Bird watching and bush walking with the wildlife, among the giant river red gum and coolabah trees along the meandering river, are also great ways to unwind and soak up the beauty of this semi arid landscape. Increasingly artists are finding our station the perfect paradise to paint, relax and enjoy this calm and peaceful rural retreat.

catch of the day
Catch of the day

Wandering around the historic station (on a guided 4WD tour with Liz or by yourself using the station ‘mud maps’) sets you to wondering what life must have been like in this remote spot at the turn of the century. When paddle steamers were the backbone of this vast country and the thriving port of Bourke was the largest wool railhead in the world. When modern shearing was pioneered at Dunlop Station (Trilby was originally part of the million acre Dunlop) when Samuel McCaughey shore his entire flock of over 180,000 sheep with the newly invented Wolsley shears in 1888. When stockmen on horseback, teamsters, shearer’s and landowners shaped this regions early history and gave it the reputation of being a hard, dusty frontier land. Memorabilia dating from those times and found on the station is on display, along with a vast collection of mounted prints.
