Lake Mungo Outback Beds |
One of the icons of the Outback, Lake Mungo is a must-see for anyone touring Outback NSW. Located about 1.5 hour north of Mildura, in the states south-west, Lake Mungo is in theory nothing more than the remains of a lake that last had permanent water in it over 10,000 years ago. In reality it is one of the most significant regions in relation to indigenous culture as it is the site that contains evidence of continual human habitation stretch over 40,000+ years; making it the longest in Australia.
Over time, the sediment of the lake blown by the prevailing winds to create a sand dune stretching over 20kms along its eastern back. This dune, made up of various sediment layers has been eroded by the rain to form the unique and highly recognised 'Walls of China'. This erosion has revealed the evident of indigenous habitation in the form of ancient fire pits, stone tools, shell middens and even ceremonial sites.
Lake Mungo is located within the Mungo National Park and is part of the Willandra Lakes World Heritage area.
