Things to Do:
Once you have settled in and either put up the tent or plugged in your Van to a powered site, relax beside the river and picture the days of the Paddle Steamers that plied their trade in a bygone era or go for a stroll along its banks.
Old Buckanbe was settled in the early 1850's by William Henry Suttor and his colleague Edward Harte Acres, being the earliest Holding taken up in the District.
Edward Harte Acres had the dubious claim to fame of introducing Rabbits to the District in 1878 as an alternative source of "fresh meat", a break from the 'salted rations' that were the daily fare. These were the days before refrigeration.
You can see points of historical interest where:
- Breaker Morant broke in horses at Old Buckanbe prior to going to South Africa and the Boer War.
- The bushranger Captain Starlight bailed up the homestead in return for a horse & provisions in 1860.
- The site of Major Thomas Mitchell’s Camp 10 on his second inland expedition down the Darling River to Laidley Ponds (current day Menindee) in June 1835.
- Visit our historic pioneer cemetery and “Lone Pine”.
