Dubbo Visitor Information

Dubbo is a wonderful country city of the Central West Region of New South Wales, being located at the intersections of the Mitchell, Newell and Golden highways, is t the crossroads of the north-south and east west transport routes

Dubbo is a 5 hour drive from Sydney and is very well serviced by train (CountryLink) and air (REX) transport.

From a European perspective, the area was first identified by John Oxley in 1818 but it was not until the 1830’s that the fist permanent settlement was established, Dubbo Station, by Robert Dulhunty, reputed to be one of the wealthiest citizens in the Australian colony at the time.

As the region grew, the government decided to establish some infrastructure in the mid 1840’s (Courthouse, police station, lock-up, a store and an inn) and was gazetted as a village in November 1849.

Over the next 50 years the town experienced 2 booms resulting from the gold rush of the 1860’s and expansion of the NSW rail network in the 1880’s.

The 1900’s saw the development of the area for production of wheat and wool production in addition to other agricultural activities and non-food-related industries. As a result, Dubbo has developed as a major regional economy and also provides a focus for educational resources for the area

Today, Dubbo is large regional service centre (30,000+) and tourist destination with many major attractions including, but not limited to, the famous Western Plains Zoo.
